Casey Reportedly Admitted Knowing of Diversion William J. Casey, the former Director of Central Intelligence, acknowledged in an interview shortly before his death that he had advance knowledge of the diversion of Iranian arms sales profits to the Nicaraguan rebels, according to a published account.  According to The Post, Mr. Woodward also asserts that Mr. Casey personally arranged for the Saudi Arabian intelligence service to undertake an assassination attempt against the leader of the Party of God, a Lebanese group with links to Iran. The book says the attempt went awry, however, killing 80 innocent people when a car bomb exploded in a Beirut suburb in March 1985. The Party of God leader survived. With Saudi money, Mr. Casey also worked to undermine the Italian Communist Party, The Post said.
