propane and burned wires and was being treated as a "failed device."The
SUV contained three barbecue-grill-sized propane tanks, fireworks,

were apparently intended to set the gas cans and propane afire,
Kelly said.

Stunning: Greenspan Wanted Housing-Bubble Dissent Kept Secret
As top Federal Reserve officials debated whether there was a
housing bubble and what to do about it, then-Chairman Alan Greenspan
argued that the dissent should be kept secret so that the Fed
wouldn't lose control of the debate to people less well-informed
than themselves. "We run the risk, by laying out the pros and cons
of a particular argument, of inducing people to join in on the
debate, and in this regard it is possible to lose control of a
process that only we fully understand," Greenspan said, according to
the transcripts of a March 2004 meeting.

deregulation, more opportunities to go out and take reckless risks
and-- and capture huge amounts of money.

every other month or so for off-the-record dinners to discuss new
developments in defense and intelligence, and to swap war stories,
literally and figuratively.

Lehman Channeled Risks Through 'Alter Ego'
Firm -
In the years before its collapse, Lehman
used a small company — its “alter ego,” in
the words of a former Lehman trader — to
shift investments off its books. The firm, called Hudson Castle,
played a crucial, behind-the-scenes role at
Lehman, according to an internal Lehman
document and interviews with former
employees. The relationship raises new
questions about the extent to which Lehman
obscured its financial condition before it
plunged into bankruptcy.
Crocodile Tears on Wall Street But the week's award for sheer gall goes
to a Chicago area hedge fund called Magnetar,
named after a kind of neutron star that
spews deadly radiation across the galaxies.
Thanks to the teamwork of the investigative
reporting website ProPublica, as well as
public radio's Planet Money project and
"This American Life," we learned that
Magnetar worked with Citigroup, JPMorgan
Chase, Merrill Lynch and other investment
banks to create toxic CDO's --
collateralized debt obligations --
securities backed by subprime mortgages that
management knew were bad. Then Magnetar took
that knowledge and bet against the very same
investments they had recommended to buyers,
selling short and making a fortune. The
owners covered their bets with ample
campaign contributions to Rahm Emanuel. Yep,
the same -- President Obama's White House
chief of staff. At the time he was an
Illinois congressman and chair of the
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee,
which collected millions of dollars from the
financial services industry.
